5 Practice Drills You Can Do at the Driving Range to Lower Your Scores

The driving range isn’t just a place to hit balls — it’s where you build the habits and confidence that translate directly onto the golf course. The key is to practise with purpose. Rather than aimlessly hitting shot after shot, a structured routine can make your time at the range far more valuable.

At Greenlife Driving Range in Dundalk, our two-tier, floodlit facility — now with Trackman technology — is the perfect environment to put these drills into action.

Here are five practice drills that will help you sharpen your game and lower your scores.

1. The Alignment Drill

Many golfers lose shots before the club even moves, simply because they’re not aiming correctly. To practise alignment:

  • Lay two clubs or alignment sticks on the ground.
  • One should point directly at your target, the other parallel to it along your feet line.
  • Step in, set up, and check your shoulders, hips and feet match the stick.

Getting alignment right on the range makes it second nature on the course, where accuracy really counts.

2. The Three-Target Challenge

Instead of mindlessly hitting shots at one flag, pick three different targets on the range: short, mid and long.

  • Hit one ball at each target in rotation.
  • Mix it up — go long, then short, then mid.
  • Keep score: how many out of 10 land near your target?

This drill builds adaptability and simulates real-course shot selection, rather than hitting the same club over and over.

3. The Fairway Finder

Struggling to keep your tee shots in play? Practise narrowing your focus.

  • On the range, pick two distant markers (flags, posts, or trees) about 20–30 yards apart.
  • Imagine that space is a fairway.
  • Challenge yourself to land your drives between the markers.

With Trackman, you can even measure dispersion to see just how many drives “find the fairway”.

4. The Distance Control Ladder

Good golfers don’t just hit it far — they hit it the right distance.

  • Choose a wedge and hit shots at set distances: 50, 75, and 100 yards.
  • Try to land three balls in a row within a few yards of each target distance.
  • Switch to another wedge and repeat.

This improves your feel for partial swings and gives you the scoring shots that make the difference on the course.

5. Pressure Putting Simulation (with Trackman)

Even without a putting green in front of you, you can simulate pressure situations with Trackman’s virtual golf mode.

  • Select approach shots that leave you “imagined” putts.
  • Keep score as if you were on the course: par, birdie, bogey.
  • Challenge yourself to “play” nine holes in a range session.

This blends practice with competition — and the added pressure will help you perform better when it matters.

Practise Smarter, Play Better

The difference between hitting balls and practising properly is structure. By bringing purpose to every range session, you’ll see progress much faster.

At Greenlife Driving Range, you’ll find everything you need to make practice productive: automatic push-up tees, 29 bays, short-game areas, and Trackman bays for real-time feedback.

So next time you come down, try these drills — and watch your scores start to fall.
